How Wrestlemania XXX Brought Me Closer to the WWE

Wrestlemania Belt

Well, it finally happened.

The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak is over. 21-1. Daniel Bryan (YES!) won the event, but that’s almost an afterthought.

I’m not a diehard wrestling fan by any means, but I couldn’t help being swept into the emotion of the moment. The event took over Twitter, and my friends, ranging in age from 25 to 30-something, were like kids again. The experience even made me a little nostalgic as I thought about my views toward wrestling.

Whose BABY is that?!

I just never got into the WWF as a kid. I thought the Undertaker was cool. And I was partial to the Ultimate Warrior, but I was told that it was “fake” early on. With the bloom of the rose, the entire show became hollow.

As I aged, you could call me a casual observer of the sport (Is it a sport? What else would you call it? Anyway…). I could tell you all the popular wrestlers, I did a Razor’s Edge or two, and was otherwise ambivalent.

The reason I’ll never fault anyone for being into the sport? The promos. God, those are great. They are basically rap videos delivered by wrestlers. For someone who enjoys shit talk as much as I do, these are like heroin. Just look at how Ric Flair has been used by Pusha T and Killer Mike (language NSFW of course):

And even Beyonce has some Ric Flair in her:

WHOOOOOOOOO!!

Back to Sunday.

I’ve always had a distant view of the WWE, so I don’t know if it has been struggling. If so, it seems like things are back on track. They dominated the online conversation even with the Season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones(!). That’s big.

I’m interested in attending a live WWE event the next time it’s close by. If the WWE can capture more neutral people like me, that’s big as well.

As I watched the avalanche of tweets roll by, I came to the conclusion that this is reality TV and Scandal for guys. That is to say, it’s scripted drama with several twists leading to a predetermined outcome…plus a lot of spandex. As long as it’s entertaining, I’m willing to give it a shot.

Plus, after an episode of Monday Night Raw, we won’t have an online battle of the sexes about the morality of side chicks or interracial relations. I’m seeing no downsides.

So as a burgeoning WWE fan, I have a few questions; I’m playing 30 years of catch up here:

Does this mean Brock Lesnar is good again? I thought he was washed up.

If you are a WWE fan, was this a classic Wrestlemania? How did you react to The Streak ending?

For casual fans/observers like me, did Sunday bring you any closer to the sport?

Hit the comments and let me know!

I got back into wrestling as soon as I graduated from college. Came from playing one of the games when searching for a career job. It made the search so much easier because as we all tend to find out real life is harsh, and WWE brought me back to my kid days and unleashed the inner Chris Jericho/ Shawn Michaels.

    Onto your questions:

Brock Lesnar is still washed. I think ending the streak called for the end of the Atitude Era and all the old school nostalgic personas, and opened the door for regular guys (i.e. Daniel Bryan, the Shield, etc.) to flourish and attract a different fan base. I grew up a Jericho fan, because he was an average sized guy with an enormous ego (like myself). So I think this Wrestlemania is going to bring a new day to WWE. Happy I got to watch it.

Overall, a good Wrestlemania. I was feeling jolly and cheery until that Undertaker thing happened. Literally had me stunned (no stone cold) in my living room. Won't lie. Felt like a part of my childhood died or my favorite character in a long running tv show got killed off. It's Tuesday and I'm STILL salty about it.lol.

Toughest part about Wrestlemania was watching it on the WWE Network. Had a lot of 2-3 second skips and it felt like my feed was behind every one else's. I only know because I'd see stuff on twitter before I saw it on the screen.

You should definitely hit up an event. Nothing like it. A lot more fun than you'd expect it to be. I encourage catching a live show. I went to RAW a few weeks ago and it was awesome.

The Taker loss is still heavily on my mind too lol. It's a big deal no way you slice it. The casual fan is like Hell No!

    Hey

Please don’t put WWE in the same sentence as that filth ass show, Scandal, ever again.

Aside from that, great read b

I wanted Brock to win. I really did. I was sick of this streak after he retired HBK (not a fan of HBK). But… As much as I wanted it, I still couldn’t believe he ACTUALLY won. Like Rich said, it was like time stopped. Stomach was sick. all that. Brock always been a beast but I feel like it does the business no good having the outside UFC dude have the one out of 22 to win. Let Ziggler beat bum ass taker and push him to the top. Srs

WM30 was great. Think it was the best one since WM18 for me.

I came back to watching wrestling when Rock came back 3-4 years ago? To wash Cena

I stayed bc I didn’t understand the cult following CM Punk had. Ended up back immersed in the product lol

Brining back ppl from the past generation is one of the smartest moves they continue to make. I fell off for a while too, then got back in the mix and haven't left since.lol

Bless you for this post, lol.

    1) Brock isn't "good". Actually it's been said that Taker wanted his streak to end and wanted Brock to end it all along. I was legit shocked and for people who say wrestling is predictable… well "anything can happen in WWE"

2)This was a top 5 Wrestlemania. The opening segment with Rock, Hogan and Austin was one of the greatest things I've ever seen in wrestling. You had DBryan win the title, the streak end, a whole crowd singing "The Whole World" with bray Wyatt looking like they're in a trance, and dope wrestling overall

Let me also say that it's extremely corny to me when trolls come out the woodwork to slander wrestling fans. It's entertainment plain and simple. We all have things that entertain us, so harping on it being "fake" when half the falls and moves they do would hospitalize the average person, is comical to me!

I've loved Wrestling and WWE my entire life. I've been sporadic watching at times but yeah… much love.

That WWE network is a game changer too. Watching PPVs from any device >>>>

I'm not a fan but i will say wwe network is flat out genius

I've been a life long fan of wrestling. It was just something I enjoyed as a kid. Sure I got the idea when i was older that it was scripted. But people are really hitting the floor and getting slapped…would you wanna do that 300 days a year? Probably not. So I grew a respect for the participants. As I'm older now, I'm still a fan. But different nuances appeal to me now. I enjoy the Psychology of it all and how someone can simply get a reaction out of thousands of people; that's amazing. I enjoy good technique, who's matches look the most authentic? And after that, play your role and entertain me.

When people say wrestling is fake I just say "so are movies." It's no longer promoted as a sport so you have to take it as such.

But to truly answer your questions- Brock is not a good guy lol, This just ads to the bad guy he is. It makes us hate him more cause he ended our beloved streak.

This wrestlemania may go down as the most talked about Wrestlemania mainly because of the Daniel Bryan story, The Undertaker losing. And everyones use of social media. Not to mention the rising of a couple new stars in Cesaro and Bray Wyatt.

There was a period of time where I was falling out of wrestling a bit, but after the last year and a half about it's definitely gotten better.

I fell off with Wrestling after the first draft, that was about 10 years ago. I bought a wrestling game a few years back but even then i only used "attitude era" dudes i was familiar with. Going to a live event is on my bucket list, but i want a pay per view not just a random taping. Maybe if i have a kid and he gets into it #shruglife

Never been a hardcore fan. But I used to get 1 or 2 PPVs a year. They usually do a job of re-capping the backstory for the main events.

Taker's streak ending was definitely a tough watch. I don't know enough about Brock Lesnar to have an opinion on why him. Whether you like wrestling or not, seeing Taker's streak end (and possible retirement) is like watching Derek Jeter play his last home game. So much eye sweat will be exposed that day.

I wouldn't say WM30 brought me closer or boosted my interest. However, I struggle to wrap my head around Warrior's death. It just seems…sadder than other wrestlers' deaths.

Brock is that dude and always has been. His style has changed drastically since when he was last there 10-12 years ago. I never saw the hoopla of "taker's streak when considering the outcome is pre-determined anyway. It's not like a pro sports team winning 20 in a row. However gotta give 'Taker props for being in WWF/E for so long. I've been a fan for close to 30 years now although I took a hiatus and my little man brought me back.

I won't say it brought me closer I will say I'm curious to see what happens storyline wise for the remainder of the spring. Still hoping CM punk will come back.

s/n I felt bad about the warrior passing, not saying this because he passed but he was one of my 2-3 favs of all time. I'll say to this day i was shocked when he beat hogan at WM 6.
